Calligraphy & Graphology

calligraphy alphabetCalligraphy is an art form with many individuals dedicating there careers to the artistic development and practice of this ancient art of writing.  The current definition of calligraphy is the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner.  It is not to be confused with typography which concerns itself more with type design and arranging type. Calligraphy, although highly disciplined, has a much more fluid and flowing form of creation which is unique and usually spontaneously created by the artist. The art involves the creation of functional lettering in an artistic manner which is used today in many different and popular ways. Calligraphers find work in wedding and event invitations, font design, hand lettered logo designs, graphic design, religious documents and stone inscriptions. There is another field which embraces fine art and the artist uses calligraphy to a point where the actual meaning of the word or symbol may be lost in the entirety of the art piece.

The tools of the trade for a calligrapher involves a writing implement such as a pen or brush, ink for the writing which is usually water based and a high quality paper that has good porous qualities. There are more unusual tools used such as parchment or animal skin as a knife can be used on these substances to correct any errors or to make adjustments.
